Philosophy
Owl Feet Preschool focuses on outdoor/ play-based education. A great deal of our philosophy on early childhood education is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. Reggio is a play-based approach that believes children deserve respect and learn through a number of different ways. The projects and topics explored are greatly influenced by the children's interests, conversations had among the group and through careful observation of the children.
Child-led does not mean that the teacher is passive—we are closely observing, taking notes and thinking of ways to help children deepen their understanding and wonderings.
Our ratio is no more that 6:1.
Social / Emotional Learning
It is our goal that through every interaction, kids leave feeling empowered and heard while gaining the social and emotional skills needed to solve problems. Fostering problem-solving and conflict resolution skills in early childhood is essential for developing resilient, capable individuals. We believe kids should be active participants when working through a tricky moment—we encourage them to express their feelings, ideas and concerns when working to solve problems with a peer or teacher.
The Learning Environment
Outdoor Learning:
The outdoor classroom consists of a fire pit, tinker area, sandbox, mud kitchen, vegetable and flower gardens, and many acres of woods. Each day, we will spend 2-4 hours outside (except in extreme weather), where children will engage in free play as well as group activities, games and projects. Being outdoors allows children to interact meaningfully with their environment, fosters resilience and problem-solving skills and develops cognitive and gross motor development.
Things to expect: fire building/cooking over fire, animal tracking, plant identification and foraging, color identification, crafts from nature, observational drawing and journaling, free play among the woods and yard, etc. These are a few examples of the endless opportunities nature provides and a jumping off point for our explorations.
Indoor Learning:
The indoor classroom acts as a place for children to engage in open-ended, sensory-focused play leading to freedom of expression and honing fine motor development. As a group, we’ll focus on social/ emotional learning and building relationships through community activities, singing, stories and games. Children will explore imaginative play, building materials, various art forms, and literacy and numeracy in organic ways. Projects and topic of study will be explored with careful consideration of the group.
Daily Rhythm:
Each day has a predictable rhythm so children know what to expect and what is expected of them, but the days will ebb and flow based on weather, the group's mood and findings throughout the day.
